Marsden
is a thriving Pennine stone-built village set amongst stunning
moorland scenery, six miles west of Huddersfield. There is a
direct rail-link to Manchester, Leeds and beyond and the M62
motorway is just far enough away not to be heard. The A62
Huddersfield to Manchester road runs through the village and for
those who prefer a slower pace, so does the restored
Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
There
has been a settlement in Marsden since before Roman times but it
was the coming of the industrial revolution with its need for
fast-flowing streams and good communications that saw Marsden
prosper. At the centre of the village is the magnificent Marsden
Mechanics Institute which provides the focal point for the
annual Marsden Jazz Festival. In the village there are a host of
shops, restaurants and pubs which provide a friendly welcome to
visitors from throughout the north of England.
